A closeup of Veteran's broken canine. The two upper incisors that are missing fell out after I got him during one of his dramatic leaps off of my desk.

31 Days of Vulture Culture – Day 10

10) Weirdest find?

Since I don’t personally have the physical capability of bone hunting (as much as I’d love to), I don’t really have any weird finds. However, as far as interesting bits of my collection, Veteran definitely holds first prize.

I talked about him in detail during my blog series on Skin Spirits last year, so this time let’s just lean toward the scientific discussion.

Veteran was a scrapper of a bobcat. All I have of him is his skull, but that skull includes a broken canine and a very interesting dent in the top of his skull that I have reason to believe was put there by another bobcat.

Veteran was sent to me by a taxidermist friend of mine who got to keep his bones after the hunter got the pelt. She got a surprise when she was cleaning the skull – a bobcat fang fell out of a healed-over pit in the cheek muscle, just beneath the right eye. It was a lower fang, too.

After some exploration, she discovered the dent in the top of his skull that she believes was put there by the upper canine of the attacking rival bobcat who’s tooth broke off and healed into Veteran’s cheek. Whether or not Veteran’s own tooth was broken during the same encounter, or something later, we don’t know.

We DO know this cat was a fighter, and he’ll forever be remembered for that, and the awesome CSI-esque investigation that ensued upon his cleaning.

And that’s it for day 10! Only 21 days to go!
